As part of Walkfest 2026 we led a Women Only Wellbeing walk in Stoke Park on 20th May – supported by Jess from BDEF (Bristol Disability Equality Forum). We started from our usual place at the Hub, Lockleaze Neighbourhood Trust on Gainsborough Square and we were blessed with a beautiful dry day and 6 women, some of whom were new to Lockleaze, joined us.
For those who hadn’t explored the park before we walked along some of the Sculpture Trail, finding 3 of the beautifully crafted benches by Andy O’Neill – it’s always good to know where you can have a sit down in the park.

We enjoyed the sea of softly swaying grasses dotted with buttercups as we wandered along the accessible path and then went into Hermitage Wood to see the carpet of wild garlic, the dead hedges and some more of the sculptures.
Returning along the main path we were lucky enough to see Michelle – one of the Park Rangers – who told about the coppicing that they have been doing, which runs on a seven year cycle and which provided some of the wood for the dead hedges we had seen.
Michelle had also just cut back some of the nettles and brambles near one of the entrances which was getting in the way of wheelchair users – all part of their aim to improve access to the park for everyone.
Back to the Hub for a cuppa, some food and a chat at the ever warm and welcoming Hubbub cafe. And now to plan for the next wellbeing walks which start in June:
They will be every Wednesday from 10am for 1.5-2 hours depending of the needs of those on the walk:
- Women Only walks are the first Weds of the month (first one 3rd June)
- Accessible walks are the second Weds of the month (first one 10th June)
- And other Weds walks are open to all but may not be accessible for all – please contact Gail if you have any questions on 0117 914 1129 or gail@lockleazent.co.uk
We look forward to seeing you on a walk!
Also if you are interested in helping with walks – do get in touch with Gail – free training is available.
