Dear Community
We wanted to update you on the actions Lockleaze Neighbourhood Trust has taken after you shared your concerns about the current Dovercourt Road Traffic Consultation.
As you know, in 2025 there was a consultation on traffic changes on Dovercourt Road. This included traffic calming, trees, cycle lanes and a new ‘modal filter’ which blocks this residential road to car traffic halfway along. The ensuing Bristol City Council consultation found that the community living on and around Dovercourt strongly opposed the modal filter, but supported other changes. LNT wants to voice our serious disquiet that the clear and unequivocal voice of our Lockleaze community is not being listened to.
From Our Lockleaze Community Plan 2026-30 we know that Lockleaze residents prioritise sustainable travel, including cycle lanes and walking, and this builds on the priorities in our Lockleaze Community Climate Action Plan 2024. The community has supported the recent changes on Lockleaze Road which created new cycle lanes and restricted pavement parking. They are also keen on the suggested traffic calming, street trees and other changes to Dovercourt Road that would make it a safer street for all modes of transport. We are a very climate and nature conscious community.
We also understand how important the Concorde Way cycle lane is. We have all been waiting over five years for Concorde Way cycle path to be reopened following housing development closures. We love having this route going through Lockleaze and it is well used.
However, pushing through this unwanted change on Dovercourt Road, and affecting local residents, businesses and sole traders (of which there are many living on Dovercourt Road), and ignoring the results of a very clear consultation, will destroy community trust in Lockleaze.
LNT are the Community Hub for Lockleaze. We are not Bristol City Council, but we do try to build trust between the Council and our community – working with particular Bristol City Council departments to share our lived experience of what two way community conversations might look like. We know that a better approach to community consultations is possible.
Here’s what LNT are doing:
- We’ve written to Bristol City Council to voice our concern that our community voice is not being heard.
- We are putting in a statement and question to the Bristol City Council Transport Committee taking place on Thursday 22nd October 5pm at City Hall.
- On behalf of the people that have signed the Dovercourt Road Trafffic Consultation, we will deliver their petition to Bristol City Council.
- We are offering the Lockleaze community space at The Hub to have a community meeting about this issue.
- If anyone wants to add a question or statement to the Transport Committee on 22 October, there’s a link here.
- Please make sure you contact your Local Councillor to get your views heard.
- Come and see us at The Hub or get in touch on info@lockleazent.co.uk if you want to discuss anything.
LNT know that listening to our communities is crucial for the future of Lockleaze and Bristol. We are asking Bristol City Council Transport team to please take some time to work with our community to achieve alternative, workable solutions to these proposed changes – that is the best way forward.
Yours, The LNT Team
