“I Learnt About Three New Things Today and I’ve Been Coming Here for Years!” – Purdown History Walk

A collaboration with Lockleaze Neighbourhood Trust, Bristol City Council and Steve England Outdoor Learning.

We are working together to promote community conversations about your heritage conservation priorities and which access improvements are needed for Stoke Park.

Thank you to all the residents who joined us for the second ‘Less Walk More Talk’ on the History of Purdown on the weekend.
This was our 8th event in this exciting free programme and it turned into a beautiful morning. We took our time and followed an altered route to avoid the more muddy areas but still visited many of the Purdown features together.

We were joined by an amazing student who is currently working towards their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. They have been learning all about the project and how to become a walk leader. This week they learnt about planning a walk, risk assessments, group facilitation and community engagement.

The sun was shining and the views were spectacular as we tried to name and spot some of the well known landmarks across Bristol. We visited the ever popular goats at the gun battery and learnt more about its fascinating history and many uses over the years, including more about the people who lived there. Steve shared his knowledge as we crisscrossed Purdown and we all learned something new.

We visited the site of the Tomb of Horatio and discussed the preservation of the parks heritage and then delved into the past learning about Purdown Farm, Stoke Park Colony, Elm Tree Farm, Heath House, Beech House and Badminton Estate, and their relationship to Stoke Park Estate over the years.
Everyone was surprised to discover the bomb crater and learn about the quarries too.
A great walk with a great group.

“I enjoyed following in the footsteps of the many park users over the years and hearing about the Romans”
“I learnt about 3 new things today and I’ve been coming here for years!”
“Thank you both for such an interesting walk. A lovely way to spend a Saturday morning in the sunshine!”

As we finished our walk we discussed the importance of this project and how the surveys are supporting people to join the conversation.
Please don’t forget to complete your feedback.
