A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for the History of Purdown this weekend-it was our 21st event. This was a slower paced walk and one of the accessible events with BSL translators joining us.
It turned out to be a beautiful St David’s day and we managed to see a lot of daffodils as we explored the park, discovering the many historical features hidden in plain sight.

We made full use of the accessible paths as we learnt about sloping football pitches, the remnants of country lanes and the still visible clues to the sites of previous farms. We heard all about the iconic BT Tower, its predecessor and had a discussion about the
bunkers and why there is no aircraft warning light on top.
We visited the Gun Battery and learnt about not just its role in the war but also about its change of use over the years- and of course we met two of the famous Street Goats who were also enjoying the sunshine.
We also visited the bomb crater which many have passed without realising what it is.
Really interesting to hear about all the war related information- I didn’t realise it was a bomb crater!
We then visited the remains of the Tomb of Horatii, learnt about the ancient tree lines, Beech House, Heath House and galloped along Purdown Ridge following the ancient carriageway.
I’ve been walking Purdown ridge for over 30 years and I never knew it was an old carriage way.
On the way back to our starting point we all explored the restored wall searching for signs of clay pipes. Our thanks to everyone who attended- for your questions and your interest.
Throughout the event we pause often for questions and we also discuss the historical heritage features we passed and spoke about the importance of feedback and how it’s already bringing about change.
