Our Friendly Thursday Group recently enjoyed a powerful and inspiring poetry workshop led by Sukina Noor, Bristol Poet. The session brought together a diverse group of residents, including people who have experienced migration and are building new lives here in the UK.

Sukina began by inviting everyone to think about the meaning of home. She asked us to reflect on the memories we carry with us whether through a familiar smell, a favourite taste, or a sound that reminds us of where we come from. As people shared their stories, the room was filled with honesty, warmth, and understanding. It was a wonderful reminder that while everyone’s journey is different, we all have memories and experiences that connect us.
The workshop gave participants the confidence to express themselves through words, even when language can sometimes feel like a barrier.
One participant shared, “I have lots of emotions and stories to share, but language is a barrier for me. I’m happy that now I can share and express my feelings .”
Another resident said, “I learned a lot of new words. I’m happy I met Sukina and everyone who joined.”
A participant who has been living in the UK for seven months reflected, “After what I have been through and moving to the UK seven months ago, I really appreciate living in the UK and the help and support I have received.”
“I really liked this workshop, we said the unspoken words, I am happy to be here again“
“So good to hear people stories especially how they feel welcome in Bristol“
“Home is the smell of Bakhour and chai with cardamom biscuits“

The workshop celebrated the power of poetry to bring people together, build confidence, and create a safe space where everyone could be heard. We are grateful to Sukina Noor and Evolve Music for leading such a meaningful session at Lockleaze Neighbourhood Trust and helping our community connect through creativity, kindness, and shared experiences.
Following the positive feedback from everyone who attended, we hope to welcome Sukina Noor back to the Lockleaze Neighbourhood Trust in September for another inspiring workshop, giving even more residents the opportunity to discover the power of poetry and connection.
Friendly Thursday is a craft group run every Thursday from 1pm – 3pm at the Hub. Everyone is welcome to attend.
