It’s autumn, and it is time to cut the hay!
An important part of maintaining beautiful wildflower meadows, is cutting them back and raking them off. It helps control the grass, and means the flowers will come back better next year. Using a scythe rather than a mower or strimmer gives us more control, and removes the need to use power. They’re also quieter for both our human and animal neighbours, less disruptive to wildlife and more fun.

Neighbours on 9 Lockleaze streets have been out scything and raking in the last couple of weeks, and putting their meadows to bed for the winter. They all had beautiful shows of wildflowers earlier in the year, that the same residents had sown themselves with the Really Wild Lockleaze Project.
Jealous you didn’t get to scythe? Its easy, and fun – come and try it out on 27th October at the meadows at Lockleaze Sports Centre. More info here.
