This funded project was supported by city-wide programme Bristol Ageing Better, led by Age UK Bristol and supported by the Big Lottery Fund. In Lockleaze the funding supported a specialist engagement worker based in the Hub who focused on improving the quality of life for over 55s in Lockleaze. Through surveys, 1-2-1 and group work, older residents identified issues that mattered to them and were supported to connect into their community.
Through this funding we started or supported groups including ukulele, gentle exercise and a monthly film club to help older people in the community connect through activities they enjoyed. Our engagement worker worked with residents to identify opportunities they would enjoy, and supported them to join a new group, including through resolving transport issues. For some members who had been very isolated, this was the most difficult step. We also had regular karaoke nights with food and fun, which were much loved intergenerational events. Older residents also received computer training work, ‘eat well spend less’ training courses and joined our residents’ planning group. We were also part of a network of Bristol Ageing Better workers in the area, in order to reach as many older people as possible.
This funding ended in March 2020, though it remains a priority to support people of all ages to engage with activities that connect us through wellbeing, action and social justice. We were aware that Covid-19 was very difficult for everyone but particularly for older and more vulnerable members of our community it has been very isolating. Through the pandemic we continued to work to address this through art packs, linking the school with supported living homes for carol singing, and supporting dispute resolution with residents and their care home.
